Is this a Good Time to Start Your Real Estate Career?
62The past couple of years the Real Estate market has gone through hard times and challenging issues with the economy, despite the many incentives from the government and low interest rates benefiting buyers. The housing market prices have plummeted in most areas of the country, and in many cases, some areas do not make any sense in prices. Desperate sellers and skeptical/cautious potential buyers have influenced the market as well. Unemployment in some families has been the cause of many short sales and foreclosures. In many cases, short sales are the new foreclosure.
Despite the many challenges Real Estate professionals face in this market, many have held their ground and rode out the storm; others have gone back to work, either full-time or part-time, depending much on total household income. Many new agents with limited budgets have had to go back to a different source of income, at least temporarily, until the stormy market dissipates. Many Real Estate agents, who have been in the business for long, have the advantage of an established career, old clients, and many referrals. Some who have managed to make a presence in their neighborhoods or area of expertise have been able to ride the storm as well. However, the many "We are Hiring" signs at tons of Real Estate offices tell a story - "We Desperately Need Agents."
The question in the minds of many people interested in a Real Estate Career might be, "Is this a good time to start my Real Estate career? News might be confusing - news of recovery, the market conditions, the RE agent friend who had to go back to another job... - all this can be overwhelming and weighing in someone's mind. However, the answer to this question is as personal as it can get. It all comes down to finances at home.
There is no doubt that the housing market is moving slow right now, and for a new agent it could be devastating. However, tons of Real Estate agencies are hiring and training new agents, and this works great for a person who wants to start a career. In addition, this is a great time to learn the business and train yourself into the many facets of Real Estate, and discover if you want to specialize in certain market area. On the other hand, if a person depends on a steady flow of income to make their bills and survive, this could be the wrong time to approach this career. If there is a second stream of income in the household, and the bills and needs of the family will be met, then it is a great time to dip into this exciting career and learn as much as possible about it. The answer to this question lies on each particular situation.
